To Do List for Moving House
Moving house depends upon several factors which includes the distance of your move, the
amount of possessions to be moved, the size of your family and how prepared you
are for the experience. Here is a detail
guide to help you take control of the sequence in moving.

Eight Weeks Before You Move……..

Clean out your attic, sheds and other storage spots around your house
|
|
|
Start collecting boxes in all sizes from local shops
|
|
|
Start collecting materials for packing, like tissue paper, newspapers, blankets,
plastic bags, tissue paper, and bubble wrap.

Begin using up food products or cleaning supplies that you don’t wish to move.
|
|
|
Obtain or sketch a floor plan of your new house and decide where you want your
household items to be located in your new home
|
|
|
Make out an inventory of your possessions
|
|
|
Obtain quotations from removal companies.
|
|
|
Check with you insurance agent to determine the coverage your homeowner’s policy
provides for your move.

|
|
Contact your childrens’ school to give notice of your intention
to transfer school.

Six Weeks Before You Move…
|

Visit your local Post Office and register your change of address.

Begin Identifying doctors, dentists and other professionals in your new area.

Inform the following of your move. Banks, Credit Union, Building Society, Credit Card Companies, Prize Bonds, Magazine Subscriptions, friends and relatives.

|
Classified advertising of possessions you will not be bringing with you or alternatively donate items to charity shops, or dump them.
|
|
|
Select a removal company and get a written commitment confirming the date and time of
the move as well as total cost of moving including any extras.
|
|
|
If you are moving because of your job, contact your employer to learn what moving
costs if any, the company will pay.
|
|
|
Four Weeks Before You Move…
|

Never too early to begin packing. Start packing.
|
|
|
Drop any curtains etc to dry cleaner.
|
|
|
Contact telephone, electricity, waste removal, Sky/Cable, to find out about service disconnection policies and
to schedule disconnect or discontinue dates.

Request refunds if applicable on rental deposits if renting and give notice to vacate
property.
|
|
|
Contact your insurance companies (house, car, medical, and life) to advise and
arrange cover for your new address.

|
Three Weeks Before You Move…
|

Finalise your travel plans.
|
|
|
Close local bank accounts and open up bank accounts
in your new area
|
|
|
Resign from clubs and organisations where you will not be able to continue in your
new community.
|
|
|
Return items borrowed from others and retrieve what you have loaned.

|
Contact Motor Tax Office of your new address.
|
|
|
Arrange and confirm child care arrangements in your new area.
|
|
|
Two Weeks Before You Move….
|

Organise transportation of pets or plants.
|
|
|
Get your car serviced in advance of moving.

|
|
Contact the removal company to confirm dates again.
|

Return library books, rental DVDs’, and pay outstanding local bills.

Final Week Before You Move….

Have detailed directions to your new home and emergency mobile numbers for your
removal company.

Disconnect all appliances from electrical sockets
|

|
Give away
plants you don’t wish to move.

Cancel or
change address of you newspaper subscription

Disconnect, bundle, and label removable cables and power chords with masking tape.

Organise extra week’s medical prescriptions and have your regular prescription
forwarded to your new pharmacy.

Organise local electrician to connect up all electrical appliances on arrival at your new home. That day or preferably the day after arriving.

Moving Day….
|

Don’t leave until the movers have finished. Give your movers directions to your new
home
|
|
|
Keep an inventory list of what has been loaded and keep copies save until your
furniture is delivered to your new home.

|
Record your final electricity meter reading.
|
|

Unpack your “Survival and Arrival” packs
|

Check electricity, gas, and water are working. Contact utility companies if they
have not.

|
Place plastic sheets or runners on the floor to minimise dirt in your new house.
|
|
|
Hang up curtains.
|
|
|
Be at your new home before the removal firm arrives in order to direct them as to
where each furniture item goes. Give them a floor plan of where your items go
in your new home.

|
|
Check for items missing or damaged and document this information in writing. Account
for each item on your inventory sheet.
|
|
|
Visit the Post Office to collect held mail and make arrangements for postal delivery at
your new home.
|
|
|
Welcome yourself to your new home. Make a cup of tea, put
your feet up for half an hour.
|
|
|
Time to unpack carefully and arrange furniture in various rooms. Be careful with your
back.
